  • Locking horns with challenges: how wildlife vets play a vital role in advancing conservation.

South Africa has to ramp up its conservation efforts, including in the protection of threatened and endangered species, in order to meet its international commitments by 2030 as a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity.  Dr Johan Marais and the wildlife veterinary team work with a rhino. Acknowledging the urgency of taking action in this regard, the South African government recently rolled out a groundbreaking tax incentive for the conservation of threatened species. It is also in the process of amending the Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations – which will make it much easier for veterinarians to treat wild animals and assist in the conservation of vulnerable species.  “By reducing the red tape that currently hinders wildlife veterinarians, we will go far in actually increasing our efforts towards wildlife conservation,”  says wildlife veterinary surgeon and South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) member Dr Johan Marais. These moves are both steps in the right direction, he acknowledges, but there is a lot more work that needs to be done. The decline in African elephant populations, for example, paints a grim picture, Dr Marais says. “A hundred years ago, there were so many elephants roaming around. Now, there are only about 400 000 left and just 0.01% are big tusker bull elephants, with only about 30 to 40 remaining,” says Marais, who has researched and written two books about these massive bull elephants.“Finding such a bull has become quite rare. This decline is partly due to bull elephants being late breeders, peaking between 40 and 50 years. Most don't live past 52, so their reproductive period is short. Compounding the issue, at around 38 to 40 years of age is when their tusks grow large, making them prime targets for ivory poaching, further preventing the transfer of their genes,” Wildlife veterinarians such as Dr Marais, as well as the teams of para-veterinary professionals they work with, play a pivotal role in helping protect the world’s biodiversity. Besides treating animals that live in the wild for diseases and injuries, wildlife veterinarians also assist in introducing animals to new sanctuaries and doing genetic swaps to enhance genetic diversity in provincial and national parks. Additionally, they focus on the reproduction of endangered species, like rhinos, through techniques like artificial insemination – a crucial countermeasure against the devastating effects of rhino poaching. Regulations and incentives  A critical – yet often overlooked – issue in conservation is rhino range contraction – as a result of fewer people wanting to keep rhinos due to the risks attached. According to Dr Marais, game farm owners are becoming increasingly reluctant to keep rhinos, citing a lack of support for their conservation efforts as the main reason. “The challenges in rhino conservation and maintenance, and the heightened security threats from poachers targeting their properties, have made the responsibility of looking after rhinos a rather huge risk,” he says. However, the  new tax incentive  for the conservation of threatened wildlife could help address this challenge. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the Sustainable Finance Coalition and Wilderness Foundation Africa. It aims to alleviate the financial and security burdens faced by landowners in conserving these species by allowing for tax deductions for expenses related to conservation activities, including security measures against poaching. According to Dr Marais, this incentive will partly assist towards assisting game farm owners in mitigating the risks and costs associated with maintaining rhinos and other threatened species on their land.  “I think the incentive is a good thing. If they can assist private rhino owners in any way possible, it would be helpful. Those people are playing a huge part in protecting our species, as the future of conservation lies within private hands,”  he says.   One of the biggest challenges faced by wildlife veterinarians, he contends, is navigating the regulatory landscape. The TOPS regulations, for instance, have been a source of frustration, hindering timely and effective treatment of injured animals.  The SAVC has been advocating for years for the removal of this red tape, which restricts the movement and treatment of wildlife across different regions. The new amended TOPS regulations (accompanied by an updated list of vulnerable species) are expected to be published in the  Government Gazette  by the DFFE in 2024 – having closed for public comment on 21 November 2023. Dr Marais believes that if the government and stakeholders can further streamline the TOPS regulations,  “we can make significant strides in our conservation endeavours.” Wildlife veterinary surgeon Dr Johan Marais treats a rhino. Breaking new ground in the field of veterinary care In his work as a wildlife and equine vet, Dr Marais has pioneered treatments for severe animal injuries and performed complex surgeries, such as arthroscopic joint and abdominal colic surgery in rhino. He has also treated rhinos with severe limb fractures; dealing with such large animals requires innovation and resilience, which may lead the professional to sourcing materials from unconventional places.  He relates that having cast the limbs of several horses, he felt confident enough to perform similar procedures on rhino with fractured lower limbs – only to be caught off guard. “The cast broke each time the rhino stood up,” he says. This led his team to take the drastic and unusual step of sourcing building material to enhance the cast’s strength – “devising new approaches to treatment until we finally succeeded”. Dr Marais’s contributions to conservation in South Africa go beyond his veterinary practice to running a non-profit organisation,  Saving the Survivors , and using literature to raise awareness about conservation. In addition to his two books, his 20 peer-reviewed articles have not only presented groundbreaking techniques on equine surgery and the first-ever published article on White rhino sino-nasal anatomy, but have also shed light on crucial conservation issues. This, he hopes, has resulted in a shift in public interest and understanding.

  • Beyond the Finish Line: Liezel van der Westhuizen’s conquers her 3rd, Two Oceans 21.1km half marathon.

Liezel van der Westhuizen – affectionately and aptly nicknamed  ‘ The Giraffe’  – is a beloved SA talent currently on the airwaves as a fitness, health, and wellness Presenter on three radio stations: CapeTalk, Talk Radio 702, and KFM 94.5. Tuning in means access to her helpful Fitness Guide 6 days a week, which updates people on the latest fitness and wellness trends, among other perks! She’s also well-known for tackling some of the most grueling sporting events in the world, including the infamous IRONMAN Triathlon. From stand-up paddling to tandem-cycling across the Himalayans, SCUBA diving around the world, taking on the three-day multi-stage race called the Dusi Canoe Marathon, and even braving the Cape waters to take on one of the most dangerous swims in the world from Robben Island to Blouberg, Liezel, the towering powerhouse in Radio, Television, Global Emceeing, and Sports (even as a fitness enthusiast and beloved backrunner) joins us now to share more about her recent run at the Two Oceans Marathon… 1. Can you tell us about your experience running the Two Oceans 21.1km half marathon race? What motivated you to participate in this event together? This marked my third exhilarating run through the scenic route. However, what made this experience truly special was sharing it with my sister, Monique Swanepoel, who embarked on her very first Two Oceans adventure. When she proposed the idea of running together, it was an offer I couldn’t resist. Our similar paces and shared passion for running made it an opportunity not just to stay active, but also to bond and create lasting memories. 2. What inspired you to support the I Love Boobies foundation through your run? Could you share with us the significance of this cause to you personally? With family members impacted by breast cancer, I deeply understand the significance of the work carried out by I Love Boobies. It’s a cause I’m passionate about, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity to contribute. Running for such a fantastic foundation felt like a true honor and privilege. Seeing over 600 runners donning I Love Boobies branded kit and hitting the pavement for this important cause was truly remarkable! I Love Boobies is making a significant impact in our community by providing crucial education and clinical screenings for South African women who may otherwise lack access to these resources. Their dedication to raising awareness is changing lives. With the staggering statistic that one in eight women will face invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, I Love Boobies’ focus on prioritizing breast health is incredibly important. Their commitment to this cause is something I deeply admire. 3. Running alongside your sister must have been a unique experience. How did this add to the overall journey of the race for you? Was it the plan all along to run the race together? We know you love to participate in active activities, so having a family member with you must have made it extra special. Running alongside my sister Monique was an incredibly special experience. The day before, we were cheering on my Brother-in-law as he tackled the Ultra Marathon, and then the next day, Monique and I took on the half marathon together. The entire week was filled with memorable moments! Reflecting back, the last time we shared such an impromptu adventure was about a decade ago when we decided on a whim to swim the Midmar Mile. It remains one of our most cherished memories. Despite being seeded at the back, we stuck together throughout the swim, side by side. These shared experiences with Monique are priceless to me, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Adding the Two Oceans run to our list of cherished memories, especially being part of such an active family, is truly special. I can already envision it becoming a topic of conversation during our Sunday lunches for years to come. We’ll reminisce with phrases like, “Remember when we conquered the 2 Oceans Marathon together?” or “Remember that unforgettable Midmar Mile swim?” These moments bind us together and enrich our family’s legacy of adventure and togetherness. 4. The Two Oceans Marathon is known for its challenging course. What were some of the biggest obstacles you faced during the race, and how did you overcome them? The biggest obstacle for us was probably the first 2 kilometers. Here’s the thing: Everyone is rushing out the start line, and one tries to run with the group and maintain its pace as much as possible. However, knowing your pace, limits, and strengths is important in sporting events. And what we assumed would be the most challenging part of the half-marathon, we ended up laughing and talking while completing it, so even expectations and preparation cannot always hold true for the final experience. We adapted. My everest for this event though, had to be when I had to brave the Porta Pottie and my sister ran ahead. We then had to try and find each other; So that was 10 minutes of anxious excitement mid-marathon that also added to the overall experience. 5. As a well-known personality, how do you think your participation in events like this can inspire others to get involved in charitable causes or pursue their fitness goals? I know I’m a well-known back runner who is often misidentified as being a prime athlete based on my physique and enthusiasm to try new activities. I’m not! I am not the fittest nor the fastest. I am normally one of the last to finish an event, and THAT’s OKAY! I do so many events, from mountain biking to stand-up paddling, OPEN WATER SWIMMING’  surfing, skiing, diving etc. and I am not good at everything, however, I can participate in it. And I’m happy. I just hope that in me staying true to who I am, that THAT will be their takeaway.  We are inspired and motivated to do so much by the people we favour – whether it’s an entrepreneur or an influencer, a parent, or a friend. I do things because they feel right and I feel good about the deed. I do it for the right reason for that cause; And if I have to factor in those who tune in to me daily, or who follow me, hire me, or just know me, then I hope that they tread in my steps toward the good causes they feel strongly resonate with them. If you’re being led towards participating in an event like the Two Oceans Marathon or a charity run or something, based on seeing your favourite people do it, make the final decision to participate based on being real about you and why you’re out there. YOU are who has to commit and who has to complete that goal. Be true to you – even if you’re inspired by me.  6. Running can be both physically and mentally demanding. How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race of this magnitude, especially when running for a cause close to your heart? I have to say that I was a bit nervous for this one, as I had come out of a whole lot of cycling events and hadn’t spent enough time on my legs, running. So, I knew that it was going to be a long day out. What people often miss about running events like this is that you need a bit of cross-training AND mental fitness to reach that finish. I physically spent time in the gym – working with my running coach Hannes Swanepoel (no relation to my sister), from the High Performance Centre in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town. He just gave me sold race day tips and advice. On the mental front: before an event of this magnitude, I normally do a mindfulness or meditation session beforehand. I do this to get my mind focused and to listen to what my body is also telling me. This centres me to focus just on the running when I am in the event. It’s all about time and time management – making the time because time and effort are needed to be at your best! 7. Can you share a memorable moment from the race that stands out to you? Something that encapsulates the spirit of the event or the cause you were running for? There’s the nerves at the beginning of an event, but my sister has such an incredible sense of humour that the nerves were fleeting.  We ended up giggling and laughing, which was something that stayed true right through to the end of the event, and I loved that! And crossing that finish line, and the sense of accomplishment of having done it with her, as well as getting our medals together, was really special and so memorable. Seeing the “I Love Boobies” shirt practically every few feet on the route, on runners who kept going towards the finish line happily, was honestly so in keeping with the spirit of the event to go forward purposefully. 8. Balancing your career, personal life, and training for a marathon requires dedication and discipline. How do you manage these different aspects of your life to ensure you’re able to give your best in all areas? I am lucky enough to work on three radio stations (CapeTalk, 702, and KFM 94.5) where I present fitness updates, tips, and advice on a daily basis, and so this sporting event and activities participation is all in keeping with that and therefore balances perfectly. But I am also a mental fitness coach in the business realm – working with a number of companies (from CEOs to Directors and other high-performers) on their mental fitness and strength. I platform how important the mental health and wellness of an individual is in their pursuits.  These events add to my toolbox and they fit in just right. I take the training, skills, and lessons right into the other spaces I take up space in as an entrepreneur, Global Emcee, high-performance coach, The Giraffe Brand Academy Founder, and a TV & Radio Presenter. I know the importance of balance, and of REST DAYS! Some folks joke I spend more days resting than taking part in things, but I consider it vital to my work/life balance. 9. What advice would you give to someone who is considering participating in a marathon or similar endurance event for the first time, especially if they want to do it in support of a cause they care about? I would say that if you are new to fitness or new to running, then get yourself assessed by a Biokineticist to make sure that you know what parts of your body are strong and what needs work. My biggest game-changer was going to get myself assessed and then building on those assessments to help build strength in line with my tailored program – the same as you’d do with a business coach or even a singing coach. I also am of the absolute belief that you need to get yourself a GOOD coach who works on you at your fitness level and speed. Get someone who listens to you and helps you with your own personalized program – guiding you without breaking your spirit. We are all so different and unique, and you have to get someone who understands that and adapts the plan (whether swimming, running, weightlifting etc.) to who you are presently. And reach out to me across any of my platforms should you need guidance, tips, or advice. I’m just one comment, DM, or inbox away! 10. Looking ahead, do you have any future running goals or plans to continue supporting charitable causes through your athletic endeavors? If so, could you give us a glimpse into what’s next for you? If it resonates with me, I absolutely will be either participating or at least platforming the cause however I can. Stay tuned to my socials @LiezelOnline on TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, and Twitter to hear about all my new pursuits as they come. With animal conservation being close to my heart, I can say that I will always give a shoutout to The Giraffe House , which is a great wildlife education centre in the Western Cape. You can also occasionally spot me stopping in there – one giraffe to another #TheGiraffeBrand. https://tellafriend.co.za/beyond-the-finish-line-liezel-van-der-westhuizens-conquers-her-3rd-two-oceans-21-1km-half-marathon/

  • Restaurant Review: Moo Moo Mall of Africa – A Meat Lover’s Haven

Located amongst other restaurants just outside one of the entrances of high foot traffic Mall of Africa, Moo Moo is well situated to meet the needs of destination diners as well as tired or hungry shoppers.  There is a play area and small amusement park a stone’s throw from the restaurant, and a Bounce located by the opposite entrance of the mall one floor up. Meaning there is enough to keep children occupied should diners want some quiet time whilst they eat. True to its name, Moo Moo is a modern-looking restaurant that has a strong cow theme infused with eye-catching bright colours. The dining tables have white patches like a dairy cow; the menu is laden with moosive cow-related satiric misspellings. Well-known, mostly pop, songs play at just the right volume in the background. All this contributes to a lively, jovial, and yet relaxed, atmosphere. Moo Moo is primarily a steakhouse but ‘with a difference’, aiming to fill what it has identified as the ‘meat-lovers gap.’This difference is expressed through its brand personality. The menu is fairly varied, offering meals that will satisfy most meat eaters. My espetada served on a skewer, was excellent – made at the precise doneness I ordered and seasoned well enough that I did not feel the need to add any salt or pepper to taste it. They have a solid selection of sides to go with the meals, including restaurant menu rare sweet potato chips. The main course steak prices are in the range of R135 to R285. To be able to get a AAA grade 500 gram T-bone for R255 is very good value for money. Moo Moo offers a solid variety of wines and other drinks to go with meals. Notably, they have a daily ‘wine hour’ between 16:30 and 17:30 where patrons get a complimentary wine with each wine purchased. All wines on the menu are available as a single glass purchase, with the price of four glasses exactly equaling the price of one bottle. There are also bottles of wine not included in the menu but available for purchase at their Moo Moo Wall of Wine (these are not available as single glass orders.) The food arrived quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Sihle my waiter was wonderful. The venue was also very clean and hygienic. Moo Moo’s in-house sauces (hot peri peri, bbq mustard, and smokey bbq) are available for sale. Furthermore, the caps and aprons worn by the waiters are also available for sale. Overall, I had a great dining experience at Moo Moo, Mall of Africa. The food excellent, service good, venue full of personality. I’ll have to return on a Sunday sometime for their live music by local performers between 16:00 and 18:00, which I’m told is a must experience. https://frontpage.co.za/restaurant-review-moo-moo-mall-of-africa-a-meat-lovers-haven/

  • Moo Moo Mall of Africa – A Swanky Restaurant Designed For Meat Lovers & Aesthetes

Boasting a breathtaking interior that accentuates the overall dining experience, Moo Moo restaurant is every aesthete’s dream destination. True to its name, Moo Moo is a modern looking restaurant that has a strong cow theme infused with eye catching bright colours. Aiming to ‘bridge the meat lovers gap’ in more ways than one, Moo Moo continues to break the mould of what a traditional stake house should look like. Their quirky personality is reflected in everything from the overtly tongue-in-cheek humour to the various touches like MooGazine menus, cows Mooing in the ‘Outhouse’ toilets & grass on the tables. The stores are modern & trendy without being presumptuous or too serious. Expanding their horizons, Moo Moo recently opened doors in Mall of Africa – the busiest shopping district in the country. We chat to the restaurant’s manager, Jimmy Eracleous about the expand, and more.   What makes the Moo Moo brand proudly South African? South Africans are meat eaters and our menu suits the South African palette. We carefully source the best quality beef from local farmers and our wine list showcases some of the best wines from our country. Foreign visitors often comment on how great the quality of our product is. They are particularly amused  by how affordable the menu is and often remark that you need to be extremely well off to enjoy a “meat feast” like this back home. How does Moo Moo aim to fill the ‘meat-lovers gap’? We would like to bring the best quality product at a reasonable and affordable price. We feel we fill the gap between the cheaper franchised options, bringing a more sophisticated taste to a mature environment without having the stiffness and costly price points of a high-end steakhouse. As a manager, how do you motivate and inspire your staff and those you work with? I like to participate with the staff, climb into the trenches with them and lead them as a team player. I also like to mentor and coach staff and I am inspired when I see staff develop and grow within the business as well as outside the business. What type of manager do you believe you are? I like to consider myself a participating and coaching type of manager. I understand that people all have different skills and talents and my job is to bring out the best in them by guiding them to align their abilities with the goal of the business.   How does Moo Moo differentiate themselves from other steakhouses? We do not like to be taken too seriously. We like to have fun and this can be seen in the quirkiness of the menu and the décor. We are NOT a stiff NY-style steakhouse with white tablecloths, nor are we the type of place that focuses on the young family. We are not the latest hotspot attracting social media enthusiasts but, what we are: is a relaxed affordable trendy eatery that is frequented by regular meat lovers. We aim to satisfy the pocket and tastebuds of our clients by allowing them to tailor-make their meals by choosing the sides to accompany their dishes. We focus on wine and therefore every single bottle of wine on the menu is also offered by the glass – a first in SA Being a steakhouse, where does Moo Moo source their meat from? HQ carefully sources their meat from local farmers. The central butchery matures and portions the meat for the stores. The quality standard of the product as well as sustainable farming practices of our suppliers is of utmost importance. Do all Moo Moo branches boast their flavour and flair in terms of ambience and environment? All Moo Moo branches portray the same culture and warm hospitality. People will enjoy the vibe and relaxed atmosphere no matter whether they dining in Jozi, P-Town or even as far as Secunda! What makes the Menlyn Branch so popular? The location of the store in the biggest mall in Africa is a winner. Our restaurant overlooks an open-air urban park. There are plenty of trees, fresh air and a child-friendly water fountain where kids can play. While visiting the store you forget that you are in a mall and feel like you are sitting in a park surrounded by eateries. The sheer size of the mall and the track record that it holds attracts guests from far and Moo Moo is the perfect lunch stop to enjoy a world-class steak while sitting in your shorts and “plakkies” (a Pretoria word for flip flops). What makes the Mall of Africa Moo Moo so unique and in demand? Waterfall City is growing at a rapid rate, and this seems to be the perfect halfway point between Jozi and Pretoria. Big Corporates have moved into the precinct and residential housing estates have sprung up in the area. Combining all these factors and Mall of Africa has resulted in a high-energy, bustling centre where people can work, play and entertain. Moo Moo Mall of Africa has become the preferred home for business lunches during the day and dining for residents at night. There is a diversity of cultures in the mall and this personifies the “Rainbow Nation” we call our home. What would you say in your opinion is your speciality? I always like to ask my patrons if it is their first visit. And if it is, I like to recommend, any of our tender steaks which we mature ourselves, a burger with a delicious 200g homemade patty, alternatively a Chicken Espetada which is made up of soft juicy chicken thighs skewered and dripping in garlic butter or lastly our legendary sticky pork ribs which customers will travel for miles to come and enjoy. From the above selection, there is something for everyone, and I am convinced that when they leave the store they will be satisfied and well impressed. If a new customer eats one of these dishes I know the probability of them returning is high – and this is how we convert first-time visitors into regulars! Your steakhouses boast fun and quirky decor – what was the inspiration behind this? We like to eat and we like to have fun. We do NOT take ourselves too seriously and we would like to bring this theme to our customers. What is a must-try at Moo Moo’s? A Cow Chow! It is like a bunny chow, also a proudly South African dish but with a slight Moo Moo twist. We take a crispy Portuguese bun and hollow it out creating a little bowl which is then filled with either peri-peri beef strips, chicken strips or even chicken livers. Alternatively, you can have creamy garlic snails or a Philly steak which is a combo of onions cheese and tender beef. How does Moo Moo’s stay on top of trends in an ever-growing competitive market? Moo Moo HQ is made up of a team of foodies who have accumulated more than 50 years of experience in the hospitality industry and who like to travel, socialise and dine out. Amongst the crowd, you will find an IT specialist, a horse-rider with a keen interest in photography, a former trendy nightclub owner and DJ, as well as a successful catering expert…there may be some personalities that I may have missed here. This array of characters brings many different aspects of the contemporary arena into the Moo Moo brand. Tell us about the Décor. Bright Red features in Moo Moo’s décor “pop” as you look at the store from the outside. Big red woven lamp pendants hang from the high ceilings in the middle of the store, with a massive wooden cladded staircase as a backdrop, that seems to be floating to a second level.  Upside-down steel milk pales with red inners provide warm light to the front of the store. Wooden tables are decorated with a centrepiece of wheatgrass. This denotes the pastures where the cows forage and in turn brought indoors to where the customers will be graze. Interesting seating including, large leather couches, as well as tan hide upholstered chairs, intermingled with wooden seats, which are padded with black and white designs can be found throughout the dining area. A few wooden butcher blocks with bulky cleavers lodged in each of them acting as cocktail tables are scattered around the store. A “wall of wine” with some great vintages is displayed on a huge face-bricked wall allowing customers to get out of their seats and browse for some hidden treasures that are not on the menu. On the other end, there is a wall of quirky sayings including phrases like “ Being a vegetarian is a huge missed steak”. The final finish is a bright red continuous screeded floor that leads you to an old-fashioned outhouse with farm-style toilets together with a huge steel trough forming a communal basin. To confirm that you are out in the countryside you can look out a wooden framed window to find cows foraging in the fields and the sounds of “Moo-ing” can be heard in the distance. https://www.previdar.com/moo-moo-mall-of-africa-a-swanky-restaurant-designed-for-meat-lovers-aesthetes/

  • EXCLUSIVE: Inspirational Springbok skipper Cindy Booi’s message: We’re only going to get stronger

While the future is bright for the Springbok women ’s side after their run to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup ( RWC ), it’s with a tinge of sadness as inspirational skipper Nolusindiso ‘Cindy’ Booi retires from the game. Having turned 40 in June, Booi has been a stalwart of the Springbok side since she made her debut way back in 2010. The energetic forward scrumming down at lock helped her side reach the knockout stage of the RWC for a first time before finally falling to defending champions New Zealand over the weekend. Coming into the tournament, the Boks were ranked 12th but have improved to 10th following their wins over Italy and Brazil. Though they bowed out 46-17 after going into the break with the scores locked at 10-10, it was still a milestone showing for the rising Bok side. Booi Reflects on Emotional Farewell at Sandy Park For Booi in particular, it was a bittersweet moment as the final whistle sounded on Saturday at Sandy Park, in Exeter. “I’m feeling a swirl of emotions — pride, gratitude, sadness and a surprising sense of relief all at once,” Booi told IOL Sport in an exclusive interview. “Pride for everything the team and I achieved together and for how far we pushed ourselves; gratitude for teammates, coaches, family and the supporters who made the journey possible; sadness at closing a chapter that’s been central to my life and at the thought of no longer being in that match-day bubble; and relief that the constant pressure, travel and physical grind will ease.”

  • HISTORY IN MOTION: SPRINGBOK WOMEN EMBRACE WORLD CUP QUARTERFINAL CHALLENGE.

The Springbok Women have never been here before. For the first time in history, South Africa will contest a Rugby World Cup quarterfinal, and as the team prepares to face New Zealand in Exeter this weekend, the moment feels bigger than a single match. It is a milestone for women’s sport, a reward for years of persistence, and a glimpse into a future where South Africa’s women take their rightful place on rugby’s biggest stage. The journey to this point has been shaped by resilience. A powerful win over Italy set the tone, followed by a spirited performance against France. Now, with Pool D behind them, the Bok Women carry both momentum and belief into the knockout rounds. At the heart of this campaign are players who have come to symbolise the team’s spirit. Zintle Mpupha , a stalwart of the squad, brings calm authority and adaptability, qualities honed over a career that has taken her from local fields in the Eastern Cape to the world stage. Nadine Roos , meanwhile, has been one of the standout playmakers of the tournament, using her pace, vision, and tenacity to trouble opposition defences and inspire her teammates. Both players know exactly what lies ahead against the reigning world champions. “We know the challenge that comes with facing New Zealand – they are one of the best teams in the world, let alone the fact that they are defending World Cup champions,” says Mpupha. “But we’re not going into the game with fear. For us, it’s about focusing on our systems, sticking to our plan, and showing the fight and resilience that defines the Bok Women. We respect them, but we also back ourselves to compete and leave everything on the field.” Roos builds on that belief, highlighting the mindset in camp. “We know this is a knockout – if you win you get to stay, if you lose you’re on a plane back to South Africa. Our approach is no different: we want to win, and we believe we can do it if we implement the systems both on attack and defence that the coaches have put in place. We know they are the World Champs and they’ve won the Cup six times, but they are human just like us, and this game will come down to who wants it most.” Looking back at the France result, Roos is honest but optimistic. It’s never nice losing, and with the score like that it didn’t reflect how the game really went,” she explains. “There were a lot of positives to take, and I believe it’s up to us as experienced players to pick the group up, focus on the learnings, and not dwell on mistakes. The ladies really played their hearts out, and we take that fight with us into the quarterfinal.” For Mpupha, the significance of Saturday goes beyond rugby. This is not just another fixture on the calendar; it is the culmination of years of sacrifice, of moments when opportunities for women were scarce and belief was the only fuel.  To now stand on the cusp of a Rugby World Cup quarterfinal – wearing the green and gold in front of a global audience – is both deeply personal and profoundly symbolic. “It’s massive — not just for us as players, but for women’s rugby in South Africa,” she says. “To be part of history, to take the Bok Women into a World Cup knockout stage for the first time, is truly special. It’s a dream come true, and we carry the pride of our families, our communities, and everyone who has supported us on this journey. It’s bigger than just a game.” As the team prepares for one of the biggest moments of their lives, both players share the same message with the supporters who have carried them this far. For Nadine Roos , this moment is layered with pride and perspective. Once a sevens specialist who switched codes to test herself at the highest level, Roos has become one of the Bok Women’s most influential figures. Her attacking flair, composure under pressure, and relentless work ethic have made her a role model for younger players who now see a pathway that once barely existed. Both players share the same message with the supporters who have carried them this far. “Thank you for being our PlusOne, always standing by us and believing in us,” they say. “Your support lifts us in the tough moments and drives us to give our all. Whatever happens, know that we are playing for you, for South Africa, and we will leave everything on that field. Keep backing us, keep believing – because this journey is only just beginning.” On Saturday, the Springbok Women will take to the field against the most decorated team in women’s rugby. Win or lose, they have already broken barriers, inspired thousands, and etched their names into history. For Mpupha, Roos, and their teammates, this is more than a quarterfinal. It is proof that South African women’s rugby has arrived – and it is here to stay. https://www.msn.com/en-za/sports/rugby/history-in-motion-springbok-women-embrace-world-cup-quarterfinal-challenge/ar-AA1Mn4QG

  • Springboks’ Nadine Roos on underdogs tag against New Zealand: They are human too

In the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final, emphasising the importance of strategy and belief despite being heavy underdogs. Picture: Adrian Dennis / AFP Image: Adrian Dennis / AFP There’s no disputing that the Springbok women come into their Women’s Rugby World Cup (RWC) quarter-final against New Zealand as massive underdogs, but SA’s star scrumhalf Nadine Roos believes her side is well equipped to take on the giants of the game. The Springboks have only just cracked the top-10 in the Women’s World Rugby rankings, while New Zealand are third in the world and defending RWC champions. The much-anticipated clash takes place at Sandy Park, in Exeter, on Saturday. Roos, who scored a scintillating try in her side’s final group game, a 57-10 defeat to France , acknowledged the huge challenge which lay ahead. https://dfa.co.za/sport/rugby/2025-09-12-springboks-nadine-roos-on-underdogs-tag-against-new-zealand-they-are-human-too/
