- Restaurant Review: Moo Moo Mall of Africa – A Meat Lover’s Haven
Located amongst other restaurants just outside one of the entrances of high foot traffic Mall of Africa, Moo Moo is well situated to meet the needs of destination diners as well as tired or hungry shoppers. There is a play area and small amusement park a stone’s throw from the restaurant, and a Bounce located by the opposite entrance of the mall one floor up. Meaning there is enough to keep children occupied should diners want some quiet time whilst they eat. True to its name, Moo Moo is a modern-looking restaurant that has a strong cow theme infused with eye-catching bright colours. The dining tables have white patches like a dairy cow; the menu is laden with moosive cow-related satiric misspellings. Well-known, mostly pop, songs play at just the right volume in the background. All this contributes to a lively, jovial, and yet relaxed, atmosphere. Moo Moo is primarily a steakhouse but ‘with a difference’, aiming to fill what it has identified as the ‘meat-lovers gap.’This difference is expressed through its brand personality. The menu is fairly varied, offering meals that will satisfy most meat eaters. My espetada served on a skewer, was excellent – made at the precise doneness I ordered and seasoned well enough that I did not feel the need to add any salt or pepper to taste it. They have a solid selection of sides to go with the meals, including restaurant menu rare sweet potato chips. The main course steak prices are in the range of R135 to R285. To be able to get a AAA grade 500 gram T-bone for R255 is very good value for money. Moo Moo offers a solid variety of wines and other drinks to go with meals. Notably, they have a daily ‘wine hour’ between 16:30 and 17:30 where patrons get a complimentary wine with each wine purchased. All wines on the menu are available as a single glass purchase, with the price of four glasses exactly equaling the price of one bottle. There are also bottles of wine not included in the menu but available for purchase at their Moo Moo Wall of Wine (these are not available as single glass orders.) The food arrived quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Sihle my waiter was wonderful. The venue was also very clean and hygienic. Moo Moo’s in-house sauces (hot peri peri, bbq mustard, and smokey bbq) are available for sale. Furthermore, the caps and aprons worn by the waiters are also available for sale. Overall, I had a great dining experience at Moo Moo, Mall of Africa. The food excellent, service good, venue full of personality. I’ll have to return on a Sunday sometime for their live music by local performers between 16:00 and 18:00, which I’m told is a must experience. https://frontpage.co.za/restaurant-review-moo-moo-mall-of-africa-a-meat-lovers-haven/
- Moo Moo Mall of Africa – A Swanky Restaurant Designed For Meat Lovers & Aesthetes
Boasting a breathtaking interior that accentuates the overall dining experience, Moo Moo restaurant is every aesthete’s dream destination. True to its name, Moo Moo is a modern looking restaurant that has a strong cow theme infused with eye catching bright colours. Aiming to ‘bridge the meat lovers gap’ in more ways than one, Moo Moo continues to break the mould of what a traditional stake house should look like. Their quirky personality is reflected in everything from the overtly tongue-in-cheek humour to the various touches like MooGazine menus, cows Mooing in the ‘Outhouse’ toilets & grass on the tables. The stores are modern & trendy without being presumptuous or too serious. Expanding their horizons, Moo Moo recently opened doors in Mall of Africa – the busiest shopping district in the country. We chat to the restaurant’s manager, Jimmy Eracleous about the expand, and more. What makes the Moo Moo brand proudly South African? South Africans are meat eaters and our menu suits the South African palette. We carefully source the best quality beef from local farmers and our wine list showcases some of the best wines from our country. Foreign visitors often comment on how great the quality of our product is. They are particularly amused by how affordable the menu is and often remark that you need to be extremely well off to enjoy a “meat feast” like this back home. How does Moo Moo aim to fill the ‘meat-lovers gap’? We would like to bring the best quality product at a reasonable and affordable price. We feel we fill the gap between the cheaper franchised options, bringing a more sophisticated taste to a mature environment without having the stiffness and costly price points of a high-end steakhouse. As a manager, how do you motivate and inspire your staff and those you work with? I like to participate with the staff, climb into the trenches with them and lead them as a team player. I also like to mentor and coach staff and I am inspired when I see staff develop and grow within the business as well as outside the business. What type of manager do you believe you are? I like to consider myself a participating and coaching type of manager. I understand that people all have different skills and talents and my job is to bring out the best in them by guiding them to align their abilities with the goal of the business. How does Moo Moo differentiate themselves from other steakhouses? We do not like to be taken too seriously. We like to have fun and this can be seen in the quirkiness of the menu and the décor. We are NOT a stiff NY-style steakhouse with white tablecloths, nor are we the type of place that focuses on the young family. We are not the latest hotspot attracting social media enthusiasts but, what we are: is a relaxed affordable trendy eatery that is frequented by regular meat lovers. We aim to satisfy the pocket and tastebuds of our clients by allowing them to tailor-make their meals by choosing the sides to accompany their dishes. We focus on wine and therefore every single bottle of wine on the menu is also offered by the glass – a first in SA Being a steakhouse, where does Moo Moo source their meat from? HQ carefully sources their meat from local farmers. The central butchery matures and portions the meat for the stores. The quality standard of the product as well as sustainable farming practices of our suppliers is of utmost importance. Do all Moo Moo branches boast their flavour and flair in terms of ambience and environment? All Moo Moo branches portray the same culture and warm hospitality. People will enjoy the vibe and relaxed atmosphere no matter whether they dining in Jozi, P-Town or even as far as Secunda! What makes the Menlyn Branch so popular? The location of the store in the biggest mall in Africa is a winner. Our restaurant overlooks an open-air urban park. There are plenty of trees, fresh air and a child-friendly water fountain where kids can play. While visiting the store you forget that you are in a mall and feel like you are sitting in a park surrounded by eateries. The sheer size of the mall and the track record that it holds attracts guests from far and Moo Moo is the perfect lunch stop to enjoy a world-class steak while sitting in your shorts and “plakkies” (a Pretoria word for flip flops). What makes the Mall of Africa Moo Moo so unique and in demand? Waterfall City is growing at a rapid rate, and this seems to be the perfect halfway point between Jozi and Pretoria. Big Corporates have moved into the precinct and residential housing estates have sprung up in the area. Combining all these factors and Mall of Africa has resulted in a high-energy, bustling centre where people can work, play and entertain. Moo Moo Mall of Africa has become the preferred home for business lunches during the day and dining for residents at night. There is a diversity of cultures in the mall and this personifies the “Rainbow Nation” we call our home. What would you say in your opinion is your speciality? I always like to ask my patrons if it is their first visit. And if it is, I like to recommend, any of our tender steaks which we mature ourselves, a burger with a delicious 200g homemade patty, alternatively a Chicken Espetada which is made up of soft juicy chicken thighs skewered and dripping in garlic butter or lastly our legendary sticky pork ribs which customers will travel for miles to come and enjoy. From the above selection, there is something for everyone, and I am convinced that when they leave the store they will be satisfied and well impressed. If a new customer eats one of these dishes I know the probability of them returning is high – and this is how we convert first-time visitors into regulars! Your steakhouses boast fun and quirky decor – what was the inspiration behind this? We like to eat and we like to have fun. We do NOT take ourselves too seriously and we would like to bring this theme to our customers. What is a must-try at Moo Moo’s? A Cow Chow! It is like a bunny chow, also a proudly South African dish but with a slight Moo Moo twist. We take a crispy Portuguese bun and hollow it out creating a little bowl which is then filled with either peri-peri beef strips, chicken strips or even chicken livers. Alternatively, you can have creamy garlic snails or a Philly steak which is a combo of onions cheese and tender beef. How does Moo Moo’s stay on top of trends in an ever-growing competitive market? Moo Moo HQ is made up of a team of foodies who have accumulated more than 50 years of experience in the hospitality industry and who like to travel, socialise and dine out. Amongst the crowd, you will find an IT specialist, a horse-rider with a keen interest in photography, a former trendy nightclub owner and DJ, as well as a successful catering expert…there may be some personalities that I may have missed here. This array of characters brings many different aspects of the contemporary arena into the Moo Moo brand. Tell us about the Décor. Bright Red features in Moo Moo’s décor “pop” as you look at the store from the outside. Big red woven lamp pendants hang from the high ceilings in the middle of the store, with a massive wooden cladded staircase as a backdrop, that seems to be floating to a second level. Upside-down steel milk pales with red inners provide warm light to the front of the store. Wooden tables are decorated with a centrepiece of wheatgrass. This denotes the pastures where the cows forage and in turn brought indoors to where the customers will be graze. Interesting seating including, large leather couches, as well as tan hide upholstered chairs, intermingled with wooden seats, which are padded with black and white designs can be found throughout the dining area. A few wooden butcher blocks with bulky cleavers lodged in each of them acting as cocktail tables are scattered around the store. A “wall of wine” with some great vintages is displayed on a huge face-bricked wall allowing customers to get out of their seats and browse for some hidden treasures that are not on the menu. On the other end, there is a wall of quirky sayings including phrases like “ Being a vegetarian is a huge missed steak”. The final finish is a bright red continuous screeded floor that leads you to an old-fashioned outhouse with farm-style toilets together with a huge steel trough forming a communal basin. To confirm that you are out in the countryside you can look out a wooden framed window to find cows foraging in the fields and the sounds of “Moo-ing” can be heard in the distance. https://www.previdar.com/moo-moo-mall-of-africa-a-swanky-restaurant-designed-for-meat-lovers-aesthetes/

- Breaking the Scrum: Layla Arrison's Journey as Rugby's Trailblazing Commentator
Layla Arrison is tackling stereotypes and scoring big in the hard-hitting world of rugby. Recently, she made waves as the first English female commentator for SuperSport, debuting at the electrifying Singapore Sevens Rugby Tournament on World Rugby Day. Layla’s journey from a rugby-loving girl to a groundbreaking commentator is a thrilling story of passion, grit, and breaking the scrum of tradition. In this lively interview, Layla shares her exhilarating path, the hurdles she’s jumped, and her vibrant vision for the future of women in rugby. Buckle up for an inspiring ride through Layla’s remarkable adventure! Layla, tell us a bit about your background. What sparked your interest in rugby? "Rugby has always been a big part of my life. Both my parents are incredibly sporty and from as young as I can remember we would braai on a Friday or a Saturday, put the game on and support our team on the day. I remember incredibly vividly the 2007 RWC that we won, and how that made me feel. Even as a young girl, I was overcome with emotion and I knew in that moment how much sport could impact a life." You received your BA in Humanities with a specialisation in Sport Science at Stellenbosch University. How did your studies influence your passion for rugby? "It was such a defining moment for me. I only started playing rugby at university and had to choose a specialisation – I ended up choosing rugby and somehow it just clicked. I was actually a cricket player at university and then when I ended up choosing rugby somehow the doors just opened. I always wanted to understand the intricacies of rugby and how we as women could 'do it better' and so I dove into it head-on." Did you always envision a career in the realm of rugby, or was commentary a later discovery? "Surprisingly, I always thought I would go into the broadcast at some point, in my mind though as a cricket broadcaster. I remember one day after a cricket match my dad mentioned Kass Naidoo and what she is doing for women in the cricket space and I wanted to do that. I studied a coaching specialisation and so I wanted to be on the rugby field as a coach to try and shape the future, but later on, I learnt that I had a greater voice outside the four lines and the fact that it ended up being commentary and broadcasting it just matched seamlessly." *On Breaking Barriers Debuting at the Singapore Sevens as the first female commentator must have been a surreal experience. Can you describe your emotions and the significance of this moment? "Being the first female English commentator selected from such a prestigious broadcast team in the country and at SuperSport was really a surreal moment for me. It’s something you always work towards to try and work at an international level and to have done it within such a short time period of starting my career was overwhelming. I actually sat in the stadium before the first game I did (which was the first game of the day) and cried a tear or two. It just felt like a moment of 'finally', all those hours you put in, all the moments of imposter syndrome, you finally get to do what you love on an international stage." Have you faced any challenges along the way in pursuing your commentary career? If so, how did you overcome them? "I’ve been really lucky in the sense that I haven’t faced any severe challenges. It is more about the challenges within myself, and believing that I am good enough, and that I do deserve to be in the positions I am put. There are still moments in my career where I am working with male World Cup winners or broadcasters who have been doing it for years and trying to compare myself to the way they do things without forgetting that being uniquely me is what has allowed me to be here in the first place." What do you hope your presence as a female commentator will achieve for the future of women in rugby, both on and off the field? "It’s more about showing young girls and women that there is a career and a space for all of us around the table. That after-school that is an option to dream about. Rugby in both my playing career and now my working career has taken me worldwide. I have seen places and done things in my life that I never thought possible and it is only through rugby that I have been able to do that. That’s what I would like young women and girls to see. That they can be in this space and their voice will be heard." *Her Passion and Expertise Beyond the technical aspects, commentary requires a deep understanding of the game. How do you stay informed about the latest strategies and player movements? "Having played the game helps me tremendously, but all my friends are currently still playing or only recently stopped playing. It’s all about trying to immerse myself in what rugby is and has become recently and also using the experience I have to be able to implement the words I am saying. I have to make the viewer believe what I am saying, there has to be credibility and because it’s not work, but rather my passion, staying up to date with what’s happening doesn’t feel like work, but rather an incredible privilege." What qualities do you believe make a great commentator, and how do you strive to develop them in your own style? "It’s all about being relatable and having the viewer believe what you’re saying. But you don’t want to be a mundane commentator just spitting information, you want to be enjoyable and engaging with the viewer. They want to be let in on the action and you have to really bring the viewer in. Lots of commentators before me have done it and many after me will continue to do it, but you have to find your own style that works for you that you believe makes you the most authentic version of you." Beyond the Singapore Sevens, do you have any specific goals or dream commentary assignments for the future? "The Women’s RWC is in England next year so that is my next big goal. I really want to be the first South African voice on a Women’s Rugby World Cup, so short term that would be the goal. Long term it would be to eventually work at the large men’s tournaments and to make an even bigger mark in the men’s space." *What Does Life Beyond Rugby Look Like? As a young woman with a demanding career, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? "That is often so tough. I strive to be the best, always available and to be willing to do my work, however, sometimes things can happen at the last minute and you have to sacrifice a lot of your personal life. But that’s what comes with this career choice. I made a promise to myself to never allow work to infringe on my personal life, but that’s not always easy. However, I do try to be conscious around making time to maintain a healthy work-life balance." What are some of your hobbies and passions outside of the world of rugby? "I have been really lucky to be blessed with some sort of musical talent, so when I just want to switch off, I grab my guitar, sit outside in the sunshine and play a tune or two, when I’m not doing that my partner and I have a little staffy boy named Gilbert, so we take him to the park and run around with him there. I am currently also trying to do a golf deep dive and teach myself how to play, so one day when I master that art form, I’ll list that as a hobby!" Do you have any advice for young girls who might be interested in pursuing a career in sports, be it as a player or commentator? "Oh absolutely, it is about taking your chances. Be open and accepting to every possible opportunity that could come your way. Have an open mind, keep your head down, work hard and you’ll reap your reward." Layla Arrison's story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Long term it would be to eventually work at the large men’s tournaments and to make an even bigger mark in the men’s space." *What Does Life Beyond Rugby Look Like? As a young woman with a demanding career, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? "That is often so tough. I strive to be the best, always available and to be willing to do my work, however sometimes things can happen at the last minute and you have to sacrifice a lot of your personal life. Have an open mind, keep your head down, work hard and you’ll reap your reward." - Locking horns with challenges: how wildlife vets play a vital role in advancing conservation.
South Africa has to ramp up its conservation efforts, including in the protection of threatened and endangered species, in order to meet its international commitments by 2030 as a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Dr Johan Marais and the wildlife veterinary team work with a rhino. Acknowledging the urgency of taking action in this regard, the South African government recently rolled out a groundbreaking tax incentive for the conservation of threatened species. It is also in the process of amending the Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations – which will make it much easier for veterinarians to treat wild animals and assist in the conservation of vulnerable species. “By reducing the red tape that currently hinders wildlife veterinarians, we will go far in actually increasing our efforts towards wildlife conservation,” says wildlife veterinary surgeon and South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) member Dr Johan Marais. These moves are both steps in the right direction, he acknowledges, but there is a lot more work that needs to be done. The decline in African elephant populations, for example, paints a grim picture, Dr Marais says. “A hundred years ago, there were so many elephants roaming around. Now, there are only about 400 000 left and just 0.01% are big tusker bull elephants, with only about 30 to 40 remaining,” says Marais, who has researched and written two books about these massive bull elephants.“Finding such a bull has become quite rare. This decline is partly due to bull elephants being late breeders, peaking between 40 and 50 years. Most don't live past 52, so their reproductive period is short. Compounding the issue, at around 38 to 40 years of age is when their tusks grow large, making them prime targets for ivory poaching, further preventing the transfer of their genes,” Wildlife veterinarians such as Dr Marais, as well as the teams of para-veterinary professionals they work with, play a pivotal role in helping protect the world’s biodiversity. Besides treating animals that live in the wild for diseases and injuries, wildlife veterinarians also assist in introducing animals to new sanctuaries and doing genetic swaps to enhance genetic diversity in provincial and national parks. Additionally, they focus on the reproduction of endangered species, like rhinos, through techniques like artificial insemination – a crucial countermeasure against the devastating effects of rhino poaching. Regulations and incentives A critical – yet often overlooked – issue in conservation is rhino range contraction – as a result of fewer people wanting to keep rhinos due to the risks attached. According to Dr Marais, game farm owners are becoming increasingly reluctant to keep rhinos, citing a lack of support for their conservation efforts as the main reason. “The challenges in rhino conservation and maintenance, and the heightened security threats from poachers targeting their properties, have made the responsibility of looking after rhinos a rather huge risk,” he says. However, the new tax incentive for the conservation of threatened wildlife could help address this challenge. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the Sustainable Finance Coalition and Wilderness Foundation Africa. It aims to alleviate the financial and security burdens faced by landowners in conserving these species by allowing for tax deductions for expenses related to conservation activities, including security measures against poaching. According to Dr Marais, this incentive will partly assist towards assisting game farm owners in mitigating the risks and costs associated with maintaining rhinos and other threatened species on their land. “I think the incentive is a good thing. If they can assist private rhino owners in any way possible, it would be helpful. Those people are playing a huge part in protecting our species, as the future of conservation lies within private hands,” he says. One of the biggest challenges faced by wildlife veterinarians, he contends, is navigating the regulatory landscape. The TOPS regulations, for instance, have been a source of frustration, hindering timely and effective treatment of injured animals. The SAVC has been advocating for years for the removal of this red tape, which restricts the movement and treatment of wildlife across different regions. The new amended TOPS regulations (accompanied by an updated list of vulnerable species) are expected to be published in the Government Gazette by the DFFE in 2024 – having closed for public comment on 21 November 2023. Dr Marais believes that if the government and stakeholders can further streamline the TOPS regulations, “we can make significant strides in our conservation endeavours.” Wildlife veterinary surgeon Dr Johan Marais treats a rhino. Breaking new ground in the field of veterinary care In his work as a wildlife and equine vet, Dr Marais has pioneered treatments for severe animal injuries and performed complex surgeries, such as arthroscopic joint and abdominal colic surgery in rhino. He has also treated rhinos with severe limb fractures; dealing with such large animals requires innovation and resilience, which may lead the professional to sourcing materials from unconventional places. He relates that having cast the limbs of several horses, he felt confident enough to perform similar procedures on rhino with fractured lower limbs – only to be caught off guard. “The cast broke each time the rhino stood up,” he says. This led his team to take the drastic and unusual step of sourcing building material to enhance the cast’s strength – “devising new approaches to treatment until we finally succeeded”. Dr Marais’s contributions to conservation in South Africa go beyond his veterinary practice to running a non-profit organisation, Saving the Survivors , and using literature to raise awareness about conservation. In addition to his two books, his 20 peer-reviewed articles have not only presented groundbreaking techniques on equine surgery and the first-ever published article on White rhino sino-nasal anatomy, but have also shed light on crucial conservation issues. This, he hopes, has resulted in a shift in public interest and understanding.
